In September 2014, in Lao Cai’s Bao Thang District,
Vietnamese government officials announced the opening of a 245 kilometer
expressway. The expressway, which is the longest in Vietnam, stretches from Hanoi’s
Noi Bai through the provinces of Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, and Yen Bai finally ending
in Lao Cai.
Now that the road is open to traffic the travel time from
Hanoi to Lao Cai has been cut in half, from the current 7 hours to 3.5 hours. Vehicles
using the expressway will use less fuel, as they won’t have to stop frequently.
The expressway features 120 bridges, including two large
ones that span the Hong and Lo Rivers. It also has a 530-meter long tunnel, 13
toll collection stations and five rest stations.
The Ha Noi-Yen Bai section has four lanes for vehicles
travelling 100 kph while the Yen Bai-Lao Cai section has two lanes for vehicles
travelling 80 kph.
Vietnam’s Prime Minister Dung, who attended the opening
ceremony, stated that the new expressway would play an important role in the
economic development of the northwest region of the country.
The expressway is expected to contribute beneficial
influence on the development of Tourism Industry in Vietnam.
